VILLAGE FUNDING FOR SWEATY PILGRIM
Dearest friends,
Welcome to my village funding page, which I’ve created in order to raise funds so that I can dedicate myself full-time to writing Sweaty Pilgrim and getting it published.
I’m calling this village funding rather than crowd funding, as this is primarily addressed to you, my friends. You’re the ones I always write for. You know who I am, and what I’m capable of.
As you may or may not know, Sweaty Pilgrim is a book based on a hitch-hiking pilgrimage I did several summers ago – hitching and wild-camping around “sacred places and public houses of the British Isles.”
After several attempts at writing up this adventure – and with a good quarter of a million words upon the creative compost heap – I have finally found a writing style I am happy with.
In order to create the best book that I can, I’m going to be revisiting my original hitching footsteps and thumprints, digestible chunk by chunk of the journey, in order to catch more detail, do more research – and to be able to write in the present tense within the presence of those places. In parallel, I’ll also be looking for an agent and a publishing deal.
I recently revisited Avebury for a couple of days, and Sweaty Pilgrim is a ten-thousand word sample of what the book will taste like.
By advance purchasing a copy of the book, you’ll be supporting me to spend the next eight months dedicated to writing. Money raised will fund my research trips and will also provide me with a basic income. I’ll be based – rent-free – at my cabin in Devon, a perfect place for the solitude of writing. I aim to have the first draft ready by May 2024.
I'll be producing an occasional email newsletter – The Daily Pilgrim – to keep you abreast of my writing journey, with occasional snippets of writing, poems in progress, poems by others, photographs, and other forms of entertainment…
But this isn’t just about Sweaty Pilgrim. This is also about me finally dedicating myself full-time to writing – about taking my talent and my craft and my muse seriously. So, you’re not just supporting the creation of a very entertaining book, you’re supporting me as I open – and begin to write – a proper new chapter in my life.
Many thanks,
September 2023
