making love for the first time

it was stretched out over
that long and lazy May Day bank holiday weekend
that our bodies
finally conspired
to meet

not with some genital beeline
but instead
the gentle encircling of a garden
without a centre

a garden without an aim

a garden of
presence
and pleasure
and wonder

fed by spring’s sweet reign
